Those who don’t understand Obama’s popularity might want to read this passage from Obama regarding his stance on abortion.
Obama does give a great speech, but it’s his temperment and willingness to listen to other points of view, even when he disagrees with them, that sets him apart from most politicians.

Obama has a nice way of approaching a tough issue in a way that is disarming, like that way he blasts McCain but always precedes the comment with “and I respect his service to the country”. This is sort of the “jerry seinfeld”… or “not that there’s anything wrong with that” approach. I support Obama but I guess if the fact that he is polite is what makes him stand out, it says something bad about the state of American politics.
I have followed British politics for a long time and every single politician over there will exercise the same sort of politeness that Obama does. This really shouldn’t be all that refreshing…. but the Clintons, the Bushes, Karl Rove, the late Lee Atwater, etc… have all contributed to lowering the level of dialogue so much, that a simply bit of good old British etiquette seems to render Obama as some sort of unique gentlemen…
Good point
