Ohioans are against deportation of illegals
The most recent poll in Ohio has some interesting news regarding the issue of immigration.
Let illegal immigrants stay here.
That’s what 56 percent of Ohioans said in a poll conducted this month by the University of Cincinnati Institute for Policy Research — and people polled in Southwest Ohio topped that figure.
In this corner of the state, 60 percent said they favored a government policy that allowed undocumented immigrants to stay in the country and become U.S. citizens if they met unspecified requirements in a certain timeframe.
That puts Ohioans in sync with the rest of the nation, according to a Gallup Poll last year, said Eric Rademacher, the institute’s interim co-director.
If you only listened to Fox News, Lou Dobbs and talk radio, you would assume that the entire nation is outraged by the conecpt of earned citizenship for illegals (which some call amnesty). Last year many in the media assumed that this issue would be crucial in the 2008 elections. Yet we don’t hear anything about it.
All of the Republican candidates who tried to exploit conservative anger about immigration flamed out in the primaries. Even one-time “moderates” like Rudy Giuliani flipped last year and tried to demogogue the issue in order to get the Republican nomination. He got crushed in the primaries.
America is getting serious again. We’re going through tough economic times, so it’s harder for politicians to distract the electorate with side issues like Bill Ayers, guns and illegals.
The next president will have a huge opportunity to pass a common-sense compromise on this issue that beefs up border security and provides a rational method for illegals to earn the right to stay in this country. The political rewards from such a compromise would be significant as well.

I think bloggers should avoid talking about all this stuff until Obama gets in. next thing you know McCan will finally find a TV commercial that makes Americans think that Obama will pass laws mandating sodomite marriage, allowing illegals to consume our national resources, and letting terrorists destroy our freedom.
When they tried to shove this down our throat not that long ago – there was a HUGE outcry against it, despite what you say about Fox News, Lou Dobbs, and talk radio – what are you possibly thinking when you say most Americans are for this, and what would be a “common sense” compromise?
Just a bigger democratic voting block– get ‘em any way you can!
Furthermore, out of 15 comments in the article you site, only 2 supported the notion of keeping here.
The rest, overwhelmingly, want the illegals out.
Another great example of what we read in the “news” is a biased face—
Don’t believe it, brothers and sisters (or comrades, if you prefer).
illegal immigration is the last issue Demo’s should talk about right now. I am superstitious, let’s talk about the worst economic crisis since the depression, every minute of every day until McCain Palin are sent home packing on 4 November
Nick –
“Furthermore, out of 15 comments in the article you site, only 2 supported the notion of keeping here.

Are you talking about the people that commented on the article? That’s not a scientific way to go about gauging the public’s opinion.
I realize that is not a scientific way of going about gauging public opinion, but I also stated in my post the last time the dems tired this they got spanked– an enormous outcry for the public WE DO NOT WANT THIS. During that heated time, there were many other articles that stated the crap that the majority of people wanted amnesty for illegals and at that time as well, the vast majority of comments did not support the poll.
It’s a sham– don’t believe what you read – ever! Watch Fox news and listen to Rush Limbaugh to be informed
.
(Purposefully inflammatory, but in fun, not to be offensive!!!!
)
We do not want what?
Everyone I talk to (Dems & Reps) says that rounding up and deporting everyone is not a feasible option due to the costs involved and our inability to control the border.
Amnesty is defined as “an undertaking by the authorities to take no action against specified offenses or offenders during a fixed period.” Granting guest worker status, having them pay some sort of back tax and working their way into citizenship isn’t amnesty.
We need to attack the problem three ways:
1) Create a culture where employing illegals is a felony and business owners can do jail time. This will serve to dry up the job market for such workers.
2) Secure the border. Easier said than done.
3) Register the illegals that are already here. Given them a moderately difficult path to citizenship that involves some sort of fine/back tax and income taxes for their work here. After a few years of paying their taxes, learning English, staying out of trouble, etc, they can take a test and become a citizen.
It’s funny how some Americans are so anti-immigration when none of us would be here if not for a fairly liberal immigration policy. The Republicans I know understand that they’re here for the same reason our ancestors came here – for the American dream.
We just need to create a situation where we’re not being taken advantage of. Taxing their earnings is a start. That will help pay for schooling and health care. And don’t forget, we’re really benefiting from the cheap labor. If we send all the illegals home we’ll foot an incredible law enforcement cost and the costs of goods and services will go up because that cheap labor will no longer be available.
“the last time the Dems tried this they got spanked”
I believe it was a co-sponsored bill by Ted Kennedy and John McCain and there were people on both sides that opposed it. At least that’s the impression I got when it failed. Even Bush gave it his support.
“It’s funny how some Americans are so anti-immigration when none of us would be here if not for a fairly liberal immigration policy.”
That is a simplistic and offensive comment. I’m a immigrant “once removed”- my dad came from Italy in the 60′s and jumped through every hoop he had to to become a citizen, as did his dad and all my relatives. I have nothing against legal immigration- I don’t like illegals coming here and demanding we change our culture to suit their needs. There shouldn’t be a “press 1 for English” option when I call my bank or HP for computer support. Immigrants should be fully immersed in OUR culture and pledge allegiance to our country and our flag.
I agree with your #1. Penalties for employing illegals should be harsh, stop hiring them and they’ll go home, we won’t need to deport them.
When I was talking about “spanking” I was referring to the groundswell of citizens calling their congressmen saying they didn’t want this crap- I wasn’t talking about congressional support.
I still think the solution to the immigration problem is a short war with Mexico. We would obviously win that war then we could name Mexico the 51st state and start taxing them to pay off our national debt.
That would make the immigration issue a moot point
Nick – Wow, you’re offended by that?
I think I outlined several hoops that illegals would have to jump through. I would add a #4. There has to be some way to help the Mexican economy get out of the shitter.
You can’t blame illegals for coming here since we’ve basically ignored the problem for the last two or three decades. They are here in search of a better life for their families and are working jobs that a lot of Americans feel are beneath them. If the situation is dire and you’re trying to feed, clothe and educate your family, following some generally unenforced non-felony laws is the last thing you’re worried about.
As for the “#1 for English” bit, that’s just business doing what it has to to serve its customer base. I believe that part of citizenship should be to learn English, but if business wants to have menus in Spanish, that’s their call.
I don’t blame the illegals for coming here for a better life. We should have some type of strict guest worker program that should be closely monitored.
Now for your #4. With all due respect, are you f’ed in the head ???
— a momentary conservative outburst, sorry. What responsibility do WE have to get their economy out of the shitter???? Are you insane? Does that mean more taxes? What?
Doesn’t Mexico have a shitload of oil? The reason they are in the shape they’re in is because of a corrupt government that makes the US look like Sunday School— any help we provide will be squandered by the people on the top that keep that country in a perpetual state of poverty. I hope you were injecting satire (poor as it was) with that comment.
Libs have got to stop believing the solution to every problem is to throw more money at it.
Are you so obtuse to believe that if Mexico had a stronger economy that it wouldn’t have a positive effect on illegal immigration?
I don’t remember saying that the solution is to throw money at the problem, though I’m not surprised that you made that inference.
Think about all the money we send to China for goods they produce. Why aren’t more of those cheap goods produced in Mexico? If Mexico is able to create decent jobs (~ $8-$10 US per hour) then fewer illegals would cross the border to clean houses or work in construction in the US for that type of pay.
So what’s your solution to illegal immigration?
Let’s just build a wall around the entire perimeter of our country and keep anyone who doesn’t speak English out. That way we’d be completely isolated from the rest of the world, which is what a lot of people seem to want these days.
USA!! USA!! USA!!
