On MSNBC, Tom Ridge was asked to explain why Republicans should get a shot from voters to turn around the economy when they’ve been running things for the last eight years. Ridge started to respond by saying . . . John Bush . . . before correcting himself.
Now we know why McCain didn’t pick Ridge to be VP.
Sarah Palin’s speech drew a huge audience, with numbers just below Obama’s speech last Thursday.
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s highly anticipated speech at the Republican National Convention on Wednesday night nearly matched the record-setting numbers of Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama.
Palin pulled in 37.2 million viewers across broadcast and cable networks, according to Nielsen Media Research.
That’s 55% higher than Day 3 of the DNC, when her Democratic counterpart, Joe Biden, and President Clinton took the stage (24 million).
It’s also up a sharp 99% from the Republican convention’s third day in 2004 (18.7 million). In fact, it came close to upsetting Obama’s historic address on Thursday — the most-watched convention speech in history (38.4 million viewers).
So funny.

But where did we go wrong with Sarah Palin? Let me count the ways:
First, we should have stuck to the warm, human interest stuff like how she likes mooseburgers and hit an important free throw at her high school basketball tournament even though she had a stress fracture.
Second, we should have stuck to the press release stuff like how she opposed the Bridge to Nowhere (after she supported it).
Third, we should never have strayed into the other stuff. Like when The Washington Post recently wrote: “Palin is under investigation by a bipartisan state legislative body. … Palin had promised to cooperate with the legislative inquiry, but this week she hired a lawyer to fight to move the case to the jurisdiction of the state personnel board, which Palin appoints.”
The Mccain campaign is playing with fire here. This absurd notion that the press should sit back and buy their bullshit is offensive. Media coverage helps dictate the progress of a campaign. For years. McCain benefited from a friendly press. I suspect those days are over.
Is this what they want to project for Sarah Palin? I’m not sure the sarcasm and condescension will play very well. Four years ago it was easy to make personal attacks on John Kerry, but I’m not sure the attacks will work as well against Obama.
She’s certainly opened herself up to attacks. I don’t think they can play the “poor little victim” card as much after this speech.
UPDATE: One of the funniest comments I’ve seen on the blogs called her The Church Lady. That’s hilarious, and frankly it captures the tone Palin set tonight. In defending herself, she came across as very snarky. I think she opens herself up to attack for some of the things she said tonight. Her attitude makes it easier for the Obama campaign to take her on.
