Romney wins Michigan

The GOP race is still wide open. So much for McCain running away with it.

Money quote from Andrew Sullivan:

If Romney retools his campaign and presents himself as a moderate businessman able to bring better management to Washington, he finally has a message that could work. Of course, it’s just the latest poll-tested cynical ploy. But it’s working for Clinton! And she and Romney have one thing in common: two focus-grouped cynical dynastic holograms.

I need a drink.

Guiliani must be happy tonight, but I still think he’s toast. He’s pitching his tax cuts hard, as his “scare the shit out of everyone strategy of constantly mentioning 9/11” hasn’t worked. I’ll be surprised if he makes a comeback, but nothing should surprise us on the GOP side.

If it comes down to Romney, Huckabee and McCain, I think Romney has a real chance. That’s good news for Democrats, as Romney will get crushed in the general. McCain and Giuliani are the only GOP candidates that have a chance in the general.

The happiest guy tonight should be Michael Bloomberg. Hillary is still the favorite, and McCain took a real hit tonight. If Hillary and anyone other than McCain are the nominees, Bloomberg has a real chance to win if he enters the race.

Huckabee – Amend the Constitution to “God’s Standards”

Thus far, most of Huckabee’s rhetoric on religion has seemed pretty harmless. Now that he’s appealing to Christian voters in South Carolina, he’s starting to sound a little more dangerous:

“[Some of my opponents] do not want to change the Constitution, but I believe it’s a lot easier to change the constitution than it would be to change the word of the living God, and that’s what we need to do is to amend the Constitution so it’s in God’s standards rather than try to change God’s standards,” Huckabee said, referring to the need for a constitutional human life amendment and an amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman.

Ron Paul’s contribution

Few of us would want libertarians running things in this country, but Ron Paul has demonstrated that they offer very important principles to our political discourse. Even a liberal like Michael Kinsley can appreciate that:

The libertarian perspective is useful, and undervalued. Why does the government pay farmers not to grow food? Why are medications for fatal diseases sometimes held off the market in case they aren’t safe? (Compared to death?) Legislators and regulators should ask themselves far more often than they do whether some government activity or other expands freedom or contracts it.

Republicans used to be for smaller government, but over the past 25 years, with the emergence of the religious right, they have become more and more willing to use federal power to advance their agenda and therefore restrict our freedoms. We now have a Republican administration telling the states that they can’t enact medical marijuana laws and limiting federal research on stem cells. We had a Republican congress telling state and federal judges that their rulings on a woman’s right to die should not be enforced. They even passed a law making it more difficult to play poker online. When will they leave us alone?

The Terry Schiavo case was a wake-up call. Americans will draw lines on the limits of government power over their lives. Republicans seem to have forgotten these principles.

Fear Monger-in-Chief

John McCain cam out with an ad in New Hampshire against Mitt Romney trying to scare the crap out of voters. I have little sympathy for an empty suit like Romney, but it’s pathetic to watch McCain stoop so low. This man REALLY wants to be President, and he smells blood in New Hampshire, so he’s on the attack. Here’s the attack ad from Mr. Straight Talk:

Of course, Rudy Giuliani must have been really pissed off that someone was trying to scare Americans more than Mr. 9/11. Fear was his territory, so he rushed to reclaim it with an ad that features Bin Laden, Ahmadinejad and a bunch of other scary characters, along with the recently assasinated Benazir Bhutto. The ad is so bad you’ll think it’s a parody:
