Calling Bill Richardson

It will be very interesting to see what Bill Richardson does now. Will he endorse either candidate?

Clinton beat Obama overwelmingly with the Latino vote. Obama needs to make inroads with this community to have a chance at the nomination. A Richardson endorsement would be huge for Obama, while a Richardson endorsement of Hillary would help her but would probably be seen a move prompted by loyalty.

NBC projects Hillary winner in Nevada

Another big win for Hillary. The odds against Obama keep getting bigger.

Edwards, on the other hand, got crushed with roughly 5%.

Expect Mike Bloomberg to get closer to a decision.

UPDATE: Looks like Obama won more delegates – 13-12.

So who won Nevada?

Also, Andrew has an update on Clinton dirty tricks. This is old-school, bare-knuckle politics. Obama’s supporters are doing the right thing in pointing this out because it fits Obama’s narrative that we need to move beyond this kind of dirty, polarized politics.

Obama’s message

Joseph J. Ellis explains how Barack Obama’s message of hope and unity has roots in our deepest political traditions, going back to Lincoln and the Founding Fathers.

Some have criticized Obama’s message as just a bunch of clever speeches. Well, as Obama likes to say, words matter. The message of hope and unity is a powerful one. Let’s hope it’s more powerful than that of the petty politics we have endured over the past several decades.

Clinton and Edwards criticize Obama remarks

This is politics for idiots. Take something your opponent says, and distort it to create a straw man argument.

Barack Obama made a simple statement – that the GOP in recent history was the party of ideas because they were challenging conventional wisdom. Bill and Hillary immediately started saying that Obama claimed all the “good ideas” cam from the GOP. Kos rips their ridiculous arguments to shreds here and here.

Bill and Hillary Clinton think the voters are morons. They’re hoping the voters ar morons. It’s their only hope.

Realities of the surge

Joe Conason explains the realities of the situation.

As America marks the first anniversary of the troop escalation in Iraq, at least one thing has become clear. Although the “surge” is failing as policy, it seems to be succeeding as propaganda. Even as George W. Bush continues to bump and scrape along the bottom of public approval, significantly more people now believe we are “winning” the war.

We have helped the Sunnis go after Al Qaida, and that’s a good thing, but what happens to the armed Sunni militias? The Iraqi government wants them to eventually disarm, but we know that will not happen.

The religious and tribal conflicts in Iraq will take years, if not decades, to resolve. It’s a fantasy to think we can keep thousands and thousands of soldiers in Iraq until they work this out. Even if they manage to negotiate an agreement, it’s a fantasy to think it could hold without the presence of our Army.
