McCain and Iraq

He just doesn’t get it.

“And my friends, if we left, they (al-Qaida) wouldn’t be establishing a base,” McCain said Wednesday. “They’d be taking a country, and I’m not going to allow that to happen, my friends. I will not surrender. I will not surrender to al-Qaida.”

They’d be taking a country? Last time I checked, Iraq has a Shi’ite majority. McCain thinks the Shi’ites–the Mahdi Army, the Badr Corps (and yes, the Iranians)–would allow a small group of Sunni extremists to take over? In fact, as noted above, the vast majority of indigenous Iraqi Sunnis aren’t too thrilled about the AQI presence in their country, either. (The usual caveats apply: AQI is barbaric, dastardly and intent on violating the Qu’ran by engaging in the annihilation of innocents. We can’t get rid of them fast enough.)

Joe Klein deserves credit for addressing this point, and hopefully the Obama campaign is paying attention. Bush and McCain have been justifying the continued presence in Iraq by playing the Al Qaida card, but Klein points out the obvious. They will never “take over” Iraq.

Obama on education

Government can’t do everything. Parents need to do their part.

“Turn off the TV set, put the video game away. Buy a little desk or put that child at the kitchen table. Watch them do their homework. If they don’t know how to do it, give them help. If you don’t know how to do it, call the teacher. Make them go to bed at a reasonable time. Keep them off the streets. Give them some breakfast. Come on! And since I’m on a roll, if you’re child misbehaves in school, don’t cuss out the teacher! Do something with your child!”

Obama trounces Clinton again

It’s looking like a double-digit win. This is what she deserves after her lame attacks.

Also, Clinton again chose not to give any kind of concession speech. Tim Russert pointed out that the Obama campaign was watching this, and decided to go ahead and have Barack start speaking before she finished. All the networks decided to cut to Obama. Smart move.

The debates are her last chance.

Wisconsin is critical

Obama needs to win tonight. I’m not sure what to make of his campaign’s decision to campaign in Texas today. Hopefully their internal polls are showing a comfortable win. With two weeks to go, another day in Wisconsin to get every last vote would have been my preference, though I understand early voting starts in Texas today.

Obama has closed the gap in Texas and now the polls are tightening in Ohio. A win in Wisconsin keeps the momentum going, but a loss would he a huge story.

Apart from New Hampshire, Obama has been outperforming the polls through most of the campaign, particularly through the recent winning streak. Hopefully this trend continues tonight.
