Steve Forbes blasts Bush’s weak dollar policy

Steve Forbes has been saying this for years. The Bush administration’s failure to aggressively support the dollar has created serious economic problems.

The dumbest, most destructive economic policy of the Bush Administration has been its weak-dollar position–letting the dollar slide in value against the euro, the yen, the pound and gold. The repeatedly disproved theory in operation here is that cheapening your currency will improve your trade balance and that an improved trade balance makes your economy stronger and wealthier. Put aside the meaninglessness of the trade balance as a measure of economic health or sickness–the U.S., after all, has had a trade deficit with the rest of the world for 350 years out of the last 400. A weak-currency policy has disastrous economic and political consequences–most immediately, our tumultuous equity markets.

The entire article is worth reading. He even acknowledges that Clinton deserves credit for his strong-dollar policy.

Hillary and McCain win New Hampshire

Given the polls over the past couple of days, I’m stunned and very disappointed by this result in the New Hampshire Democratic primary.

Andrew Sullivan’s initial reaction sums up well the possible reasons for Hillary’s narrow victory:

Here are my thoughts: the media piled on too much at the end and there was a voter backlash; independents may have assumed an Obama victory and went for McCain instead; the Democratic base responded to the Clinton appeal, especially women and urban voters; the youth vote didn’t quite turn out as well as it should have; Clinton for the first time looked vulnerable and even human in the final days – and that helped; her final debate performance was also excellent.

The McCain effect might have been huge.

Now we have a race. As Sullivan explains in another post, this might be better for all of us. The idea of an Obama coronation after two states didn’t sit well with many voters, and now we’ll see how he reacts to adversity. He will be vetted even more, and this will make him stronger in the general if he’s able to win the nomination.

It will be interesting to see how this affects the national polls. Obama had effectively drawn even with Clinton in several national polls. This might help Hillary take back a lead.

On to Nevada!

Fear Monger-in-Chief

John McCain cam out with an ad in New Hampshire against Mitt Romney trying to scare the crap out of voters. I have little sympathy for an empty suit like Romney, but it’s pathetic to watch McCain stoop so low. This man REALLY wants to be President, and he smells blood in New Hampshire, so he’s on the attack. Here’s the attack ad from Mr. Straight Talk:

Of course, Rudy Giuliani must have been really pissed off that someone was trying to scare Americans more than Mr. 9/11. Fear was his territory, so he rushed to reclaim it with an ad that features Bin Laden, Ahmadinejad and a bunch of other scary characters, along with the recently assasinated Benazir Bhutto. The ad is so bad you’ll think it’s a parody:
